Nacido Lafayette Stocking McKee, Lafe McKee comenzó a trabajar en Hollywood alrededor de 1913. Solía interpretar al padre agradable del héroe, el empresario desesperado, o el dueño de la rancha que se enfrentaba a perder su hacienda o ganado ante los villanos. La mayoría de sus películas eran westerns y apoyó a actores como Gary Cooper, John Wayne, Gene Autry, Tim McCoy, Tom Tyler, entre otros.
