  Don Matteo recibe en la rectoría a la pequeña Inés, una niña de seis años que vive en Spoleto con su abuela que ya no puede hacerse cargo de ella. Mientras tanto, tras haber cumplido seis años de prisión, aparece en la ciudad Sergio La Cava, un treintañero encantador y misterioso con un pasado oscuro.

La niña afirma que su madre fue al pueblo a buscar a su gemelo, quien según la mujer le habían robado de su cuna. Nino y Elisa discuten por la llegada de Eugenio Nardi, el encantador padre de Marco. Para dar celos a su esposa, Cecchini le hace creer que tiene una amistad especial con la actriz Elena Sofia Ricci.

Para Natalina, Pippo y Nino es un duro golpe y la única manera de evitar que se vaya a Roma es "boicotear" a Don Matteo y hacerle quedar mal delante del Nuncio Apostólico.
